Gwiis-ganm’ala’a (Button Blanket)

Made from a wool trade blanket and appliquéd designs, this gwiis-ganm’ala’a features both an ayukws (crest) and adaawak- (history). At a time when his people were starving, a chief went hunting and encountered a gaunt wolf that couldn’t eat because it had a bone lodged in its mouth. The chief extracted the bone and the wolf promised repayment. Later, the wolf called the chief to the woods where mountain sheep and two bears had been killed. This gift was in gratitude for having saved the wolf’s life. The chief returned home, happy that his people now had food to eat. Acquired at Gingolx, 1911.
