Surely one of the masterworks of Nisga’a sculpture, this carving portrays a halayt (shaman) with his bear-claw headdress seated in the canoe he uses to voyage into the supernatural realm. He is accompanied by a crew of spirit helpers, described as Sea Otters. The sculpture is covered with ochre paint; the halayt’s eyes are darkened with graphite. Acquired at Laxgalts’ap, date unknown.
